Legionella case confirmed at Kane Regional Center in McKeesport

MCKEESPORT — A resident at the Kane Regional Center in McKeesport has tested positive for Legionella.

According to a news release by Allegheny County, which runs the Kane facilities, the woman, 77, tested posted Oct. 24 while being treated for other medical issues at the hospital.

That led to testing of the water system at the McKeesport Kane facility.

Today, the Allegheny County Health Department confirmed tests on the B side of the Kane facility came back positive for Legionella. That’s the same side of the facility where the woman who tested positive lived.

Test results on two other residents are pending.

All residents who live in the B side of the facility have been placed on water restrictions. They are not permitted to take showers and may only drink bottled water. Residents are still permitted to use bathroom sinks.

County officials said a water-purification system was also installed to treat the water.

A second set of water samples was taken on Friday, Oct. 28, and results are pending. Until those results are back, residents on the A side of the facility are also prohibited from taking showers and are using bottled water.

Water restrictions will remain in place until the system tests negative for Legionella, county officials said.

Additional samples will be taken Monday.
