Victim's mom says fatal shooting wasn't self-defense

PITTSBURGH — The Allegheny County district attorney is working to decide if a homeowner who shot and killed a man after an assault and threat will face charges.

According to police, the incident happened inside a Brighton Heights home Sunday morning.

Officers said the homeowner told authorities he shot a man who had broken into the Fleming Avenue home around 3 a.m.

The man who was shot, Curtis Edmonds, 37, of Brighton Heights, was the ex-boyfriend of a female resident of the home, investigators said.

Officials said that after confronting his ex-girlfriend and mother of his children, Edmonds forced his way inside, where he punched her in the face and assaulted her with a firearm.

He then made his way to a set of steps inside the home, where he met the woman's boyfriend, police said. The boyfriend told police Edmonds pointed a gun at him. He also told authorities that he shot Edmonds after Edmonds lowered and then raised his gun.

Edmonds and the woman's two children, ages 15 and 10, were inside the home at the time of the shooting. They were not injured.

On Monday, Edmonds' mother told Channel 11's Renee Kaminski that her son was not shot in self-defense.

"I don't understand it. I just want justice for my baby. He was my only baby, and they took him away from me. He didn't deserve it," Katherine Green said.

Green argued that her son didn't deserve to die for trying to see his children.

"He had his life together, and he was doing good. He didn't deserve this," Green said.

Edmonds' ex-girlfriend told Kaminski on Monday that she was not commenting on the incident.
