Charlie, a freshman at Montour High School, remains in critical condition at Allegheny General Hospital after he was hit by a car while skateboarding. He hasn’t been able to communicate with his family since the accident on Wednesday but they’re holding onto hope that he’s going to make it through.

For Denise Ball, Charlie’s grandmother, the past two days have been challenging after he was hit by a car Wednesday night right before 6 p.m. in Ingram.

Charlie was riding his skateboard along Winlock Avenue where it intersects with Joel Street when a driver hit the teen.

“He’s in a medically induced coma right now. It’s going to be at least…hopefully, he lives long enough that it’s a month that he will be in this coma and then they’ll start trying to take him off the respirator,” Ball said.

Ball says that while Charlie heals, she’s pleading with authorities to get more information about the driver of the car who hit her grandson because she needs to know if that person is insured.

“We hope the driver knows that we’re not being hostile. We’re just concerned with Charlie’s welfare,” said Ball.

Ball says Charlie’s dad recently started a new job, so he can’t provide full medical coverage and doesn’t have any paid time off. They’ve started a GoFundMe to help pay the bills while Charlie is in the hospital recovering.

“This is going to be a long haul for this child and he’ll never be 100% the same but all we can do is pray and hope for some information from the authorities,” Ball said.

The driver who hit the teen stayed at the scene according to police. Montour High School said it plans to organize multiple fundraisers to help the family.
