Teen arrested, charged after shots fired outside of Perry High School

PITTSBURGH — A teen is facing charges for the shooting outside of Perry High School on Pittsburgh’s North Side Tuesday morning.

Pittsburgh police arrested Micaiah Wheeler, 17, just after 7 p.m. Tuesday last night on Centre Avenue in the Hill District.

On Tuesday, officers responded to the area for an 11-round shot spotter in the area of the school on Perrysville Avenue shortly after students arrived.

Police said surveillance video shows Wheeler firing shots at a group of about 8 people on the steps of the school. No one was hit, and he then ran away.

Police said they found shell casings and a laser attachment for a gun near the stairs.

One of the witnesses told police they’ve had run-ins with Wheeler in the past.

Wheeler is facing multiple charges, including aggravated assault, attempted homicide and firearms charges. Court documents state that he is a danger to the community and he’s currently in the Allegheny Jail.

Pittsburgh Public Schools said students at Perry will learn remotely on Wednesday out of an abundance of caution. The school district is providing support resources to students and staff.
