ROSS TOWNSHIP, Pa. — Two people have been charged after police say they attempted to break into cars in Ross Township and Bellevue late Friday night and early Saturday morning. One of the suspects allegedly pointed a gun at a woman during one of the attempted break-ins.
“This is a very quiet family-oriented street, so I’m very shocked to hear that this happened on our street,” said Michelle Danko.
Danko has lived on Clarion Street for 32 years. She said she’s never worried about people trying to break into her car. But after Friday night, that has changed.
“I think now, it doesn’t matter where you live, what neighborhood you’re in, no matter how safe you think it may be where you live, I guess this is just happening everywhere,” she told Channel 11′s Andrew Havranek.
Around 11 p.m. Friday, a woman who lives on Clarion Street got home, and shortly after, heard people talking outside near her car. She came outside and thought young kids were trying to break into her car.
That’s when one of those men – identified by police as 18-year-old Zymon Campbell – pointed a gun at her and told her to get back in her house.
She spoke with Channel 11′s Andrew Havranek, but did not want to interview on camera.
She told Havranek she used her Alexa device to call the police.
A neighbor’s ring camera happened to catch the two walking down the road.
Robert Rozman saw police on the street around 12:30 a.m. Saturday.
“It makes me kind of scared,” Rozman said.
He said he didn’t know what the police were doing, but hearing that someone pulled a gun on a neighbor while trying to break into her car was nerve-wracking.
“I walk my dog late at night. My girlfriend walks the dog late at night. We have a driveway in the back, but a lot of people on this street have to park on the street. It’s just kind of scary,” Rozman said.
This wasn’t the only street where the suspects tried to break into cars.
Police in Bellevue were called to Laurel Avenue around 3 a.m. Saturday for reports of two men trying to break into cars.
When police got on the scene, the two ran off.
During the chase, police say a gun carried by a 17-year-old was fired as he tried to climb a fence. He was then taken into custody.
Campbell was arrested shortly after and was carrying a loaded magazine.
“I’m going to make a conscious effort every night to make sure my car is locked, and my front door is locked, and maybe start leaving the porch light on and things like that,” Danko said. “Maybe the light will deter people. It’s concerning.”
Campbell is facing several charges including simple assault, recklessly endangering another person, and carrying a firearm without a license.
The 17-year-old will be charged in juvenile court.
The woman in this case told Channel 11′s Andrew Havranek she is physically okay, and nothing was stolen from her car.
