Much like Thanksgiving, holiday travel through the year-end holidays is expected to be record-breaking.
AAA projects 119.3 million people will travel at least 50 miles from home between Dec. 21 and Jan. 1, which is about 64,000 more than the current record set in 2019.
“Christmas falls on a Wednesday this year, so the highways and airports are going to be very busy on the weekends before and after the holiday,” said Bevi Powell, senior vice president, AAA East Central.
Of all holiday travelers, AAA projects nearly 90%, or 107 million people, will drive to their destinations. That’s 2.5 million more people than last year, but not quite the record of 108 million people set in 2019.
Air travel is expected to be record busy too. AAA projects 7.85 million people will fly during the holidays, which breaks the record of 7.5 million travelers set last year.
