WEXFORD, Pa. — Allegheny Health Network Wexford Hospital introduced two new types of surgeries recently, including the region’s first minimally invasive procedure for peripheral artery disease and another for lumbar spinal fusion.
AHN Wexford is Allegheny Health Network’s newest hospital, located in the North Hills and the site of a birthing center as well as a full-scale hospital. It opened in September 2021 and is, among other things, a complex care delivery site at the AHN Cardiovascular Institute.
It was vascular surgeon Dr. Satish C. Muluk who performed the percutaneous transmural arterial bypass with the DETOUR system designed to relieve a circulatory problem that happens when fatty plaque is built up in blood vessels, particularly in the legs. Doctors say it can reduce the amount of oxygenated blood flow and it could lead to heart attack or stroke.
