Aliquippa Fire Department raises $28K, buys coats for several hundred students

ALIQUIPPA, Pa. — The Aliquippa Fire Department is used to coming to the rescue at the scene of a fire, but this winter, they’re doing so at a school.

The Fire Department raised about $28,000 to buy coats for more than 700 elementary school children in Aliquippa.

“Every kid is getting a coat,” Aliquippa Mayor Dwan Walker said.

The fundraiser took the department about six months, and they said it was those with the least who gave the most.

“Coats not only give you warmth, but they show you you’re loved,” Walker said.

The coats will be delivered to the students on Monday.

The department said they exceeded their goal in 2013, and plan to do the same thing again next year.
