Allegheny County Jail earns accreditation for its health care services

PITTSBURGH — The Allegheny County Jail is being recognized for its correctional health services.

County officials say the jail has earned accreditation from the National Commission on Correctional Health Care by “demonstrating compliance” with the commission’s standards of care for correctional health services in jails.

“While this accreditation recognizes the healthcare team, the truth is that it took the efforts of everyone inside the facility to make this happen. I can’t thank the correctional and operations staff members enough for their collaboration and hard work,” said Holly Martin, deputy warden of healthcare services.

To earn accreditation, the jail underwent an assessment in October. During that assessment, experts in correctional health care surveyed the facility for compliance with jail-specific standards, like patient care and treatment, health promotion, safety and disease prevention, governance and administration, personnel and training, special needs and services, and medical-legal issues.

Ahead of the assessment, jail officials reviewed and modified processes and protocols to provide a patient-centered approach that reflects best practices from the NCCHC handbook.
