Bridgeville church says Easter service can still happen safely

BRIDGEVILLE, Pa. — Many churches and worshipers are turning online for services this Easter Sunday.

But Zion Lutheran Church in Bridgeville is keeping its doors open to its congregation. The church has two services every Sunday at 8 and 10:30 a.m. even during the stay at home order.

Roughly 20 to 30 people usually attend worship while the church follows social distancing guidelines. The pews are spaced apart with white crosses marking ones for people to use while parishioners must stay nine feet apart. Communion is offered to individuals and family groups separately to maintain a safe distance. There is no offering plate and no sign of peace.

Pastor Edward Grimenstein said church leaders adjusted how they worship because of the coronavirus pandemic, saying churches are essential.

“I think right now more than ever, especially during a pandemic, when people are fearful, they should continue to be fed and nourished spiritually. I think it is widely important for the welfare of our society that we continue to do so but do so in a responsible way that makes sense,” Grimenstein said.

He said it is up to the individual if they want to wear a mask during service. After each service, a custodian wipes down the pews with bleach, water and disinfectant.
