PITTSBURGH — It’s common for people to use a delivery service. In this case, a Southside salon got a notification that its Instacart shopper was on its way.
The surveillance video inside Blinc Bronze Beauty shows that Instacart shopper dropping off the groceries.
“She was taking a case of water, practically just turned the corner, and in that moment the shopper went behind the front desk on camera, stole Julia’s purse and all the cash and left,” said Nikki Becker, co-owner of the salon.
In less than an hour, Becker said charges started racking up on their business accounts.
“She spent around $3,500 at Apple; went to Foot Locker, spent $1,000 on our debit card; went to Gap, a tobacco store and a bunch of other spending — about $5000 on our business debit card,” Becker said.
The frustrations are mounting for these owners, as the woman has yet to be identified or charged. Police said they are investigating, and Instacart released the following statement:.
“We take the safety of the entire Instacart community very seriously and respond promptly to all law enforcement investigations. We’ve removed the shopper from our platform, and we’ve been in contact with local law enforcement on this matter and are continuing to offer assistance as they investigate this incident.”
While the shopper was removed from the Instacart platform, Becker said that’s just not enough.
“I think the most frustrating part is that you think a company the size of Instacart would want to help and do the right thing, especially during the holiday season,” Becker said.
As of right now, the salon has not gotten any money back from the bank or Instacart for the fraudulent charges. They are now waiting for police to identify the thief.
