Allegheny County — Nearly 9,000 people have signed a petition calling on Kennywood Park to scrap plans to retire four beloved rides and instead move them to another area of the amusement park.

Earlier this month, officials at the park -- listed as a National Historic Landmark -- announced they would retire the Kangaroo, Paratrooper, Bayern Kurve and Volcano.

But a group of season ticket holders have created the “Save the Kangaroo and Paratrooper at Kennywood Park” petition on Change.org

They are calling for Palace Entertainment, the parent company of Kennywood, to instead move the rides to the “Lost Kennywood” section of the park.

According to the petition: “The Kangaroo is the last remaining ride of its kind in the world, which Kennywood touts prior to boarding the ride. This one of kind ‘Flying Coaster’ debuted at the park in 1962, where it remains a crowd favorite of all ages."

In a statement announcing the decision to retire the rides, officials said, “change is constant.”

“In the past three years, we’ve invested more in new attractions than at any previous point in the park’s storied history,” the statement read. “Part of the evolution is a continuous examination of the sustainability, capacity and popularity of our attraction lineup.”
