PITTSBURGH — Officials with the Pittsburgh Veterans Affairs hospitals and clinics announced new changes will be put in place due to the spread of the coronavirus.
All VA facilities, including the one’s in Pittsburgh, have implemented new screening measures to check for signs of respiratory illness and exposure to COVID-19. Via telehealth, VA officials said they can virtually screen people for symptoms. In person, there are standardized screening questions during check in and during initial screening.

VA officials said there are limited visitations to the Community Living Center at the H.J. Heinz III campus as well. Everyone, including visitors and employees, must now enter through building 71, the ambulatory care center. All entrants will be screened for fever, cough and shortness of breath. People testing positive will not be allowed in. Visitation is limited to immediate family members or designated caregivers. Exceptions will be made for visitors of patients who are in critical condition or in end-of-life situations on a case-by-case basis.
Veterans heading to facilities for outpatient care are asked to call first when they have symptoms of a cold or flu. The number to call is 412-360-6000 and veterans can select option No. 3 to speak to a nurse before visiting the facility. Veterans who have traveled to a foreign country in the last two weeks or have had direct contact with a person diagnosed with coronavirus should also call ahead.
