As unemployment jumps, those trying to get assistance feel left behind

PITTSBURGH — Tens of thousands of people in our area have lost their jobs since Gov. Wolf implemented the stay-at-home order a month ago, but many people say they’re struggling to get unemployment.

Between websites that crash and phones that are constantly busy some people say they’ve tried to reach out hundreds of times.

“I called 710 times today trying to file for unemployment,” one person told Channel 11′s Amy Hudak.

Wolf said the commonwealth is investing in new technology to bolster the online system and bringing in more employees to reduce call wait times and speed up processing.

“I acknowledge we’ve disappointed far too many people,” he said Friday.

If you are trying to get through to the office of unemployment, they say the best days to call or login online are Thursdays and Fridays.
