McKEESPORT, Pa. — The American Red Cross and the McKeesport Fire Department joined forces Saturday in hopes of preventing unnecessary fire tragedies.
Red Cross volunteers and members of the McKeesport Fire Department provided fire safety information to McKeesport residents during a door-to-door canvassing event.
Project SAFE (Smoke Alarm and Fire Education) is an effort to reduce deaths and injuries in residential fires by installing free smoke alarms.
Saturday's door-to-door event follows an October house fire in McKeesport that killed six people, including four children. It was later discovered that the home didn't have working smoke alarms.
Jimmy Young, a McKeesport firefighter, said, "If you're listening to this, please test your smoke detectors, make sure they're working properly because this could have been prevented."
