Apartment explodes in Clairton, residents smelled gas odor beforehand

CLAIRTON, Pa. — An apartment exploded in Clairton late Thursday night. Channel 11 has learned that residents smelled a gas odor before the explosion.

Allegheny County dispatchers said police, fire and EMS units were called to the 3700 block of Miles Avenue at 11:40 p.m.

Our crew at the scene saw an apartment that was destroyed. Residents told us they were watching the Pittsburgh Steelers game when the apartment exploded.

Peoples Gas sent Channel 11 a statement saying they received reports of a possible gas odor on Thursday. The company says they sent a technician who found the odor was not coming from the Peoples system.

In a statement released Friday morning, Peoples said that as of 9:45 a.m. Friday, crews have not detected natural gas in the air or soil in the area.
