Veterans Day is Friday, a day to recognize all U.S. veterans and active military service members.
There are about 19 million veterans, according to the Department of Veterans Affairs.
Several local businesses offer free items or discounts as a way to thank them for their service.
Most ask for proof of service. Be sure to check if offers are valid.

Golden Corral will give a complimentary “thank you” meal on Nov. 14 in recognition of Veterans Day.
All U.S. service members, retired military and veterans can enjoy a free dinner buffet and beverage at their nearest Golden Corral from 5 p.m. to close.
The Military Appreciation Night offer is available at all Golden Corral restaurants nationwide for dine-in only, and it is not applicable for spouses or family members. A military identification is not required to receive the complimentary meal.
The chain will also be raising funds through guest contributions for Disabled American Veterans, a nonprofit organization that provides lifetime support for veterans of all generations and their families

Panera Bread bakery-cafés in Allegheny, Beaver, Butler, Fayette, Monongalia, Washington and Westmoreland counties will honor all veterans and active-duty military on Nov. 11 with a free pastry or bakery item and cup of coffee.
Active military members and veterans can redeem this offer by visiting their nearest Panera Bread location in their uniform or with proof of U.S. Military service.
Participating locations in Pennsylvania include: Allison Park, Bethel Park, Bridgeville, Monroeville, Moon Township, Mt. Sheetz will offer a free meal and car wash Nov. 11. All veterans and active duty military personnel can enjoy a free half ham and cheese or meatball sub and a regular size fountain drink at any of Sheetz’s 660+ store locations. Sheetz will also provide a free car wash to veterans and active duty military. This offer only applies to the $9 wash option and is only available at Sheetz stores that have a car wash. Military ID or proof of service must be presented to qualify.

Carnegie Science Center general admission is free Nov. 11 for all U.S. military veterans and active members and up to three of their guests. Valid identification must be presented. Visitors can attend a Veteran’s Day ceremony from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. on the USS Requin submarine and inside Carnegie Science Center’s RiverView Café.
