Arrest made in Andre Gray homicide investigation

PITTSBURGH — Pittsburgh police announced Wednesday that an arrest was made in connection with the homicide of Andre Gray.

Gray, 34, was reported missing from his Lawrenceville home on Oct. 25, 2014.

His body was found last month in the Ohio River in West Virginia. Gray suffered a fatal gunshot wound.

Hubert Wingate, 30, of Homewood, faces charges of criminal homicide, former felon or persons not to possess/use/manufacture/control of a firearms, arson, theft by unlawful taking, receiving stolen property, cruelty to animals, tampering with/fabricating physical evidence and abuse of a corpse.

Authorities said Wingate was already in the Allegheny County Jail. He was arrested previously on an outstanding warrant for an assault in Colorado.

Police said that when he was picked up in Pittsburgh on that warrant, he had a concealed semi-automatic handgun with him.

According to the criminal complaint filed against Wingate, a Sony PlayStation stolen from Gray’s home is what ultimately tied him to the crime.

The gaming system was found at a home in Homewood that Wingate shared with his mother, the complaint stated.

Detectives traced the IP address to the Wingate home and matched the serial number to Gray’s device.

A witness told authorities that Wingate’s plan was to dump Gray’s body in the river in Arnold, but when the body wouldn’t sink, the witness said Wingate shot Gray two or three times.

The complaint stated that when the body still wouldn’t sink, Wingate ordered the witness to get into the water and stab Gray’s body to “create holes.”

Authorities said at this point, a motive for the murder remains unclear.

There was no word on whether any additional charges would be filed against the witness mentioned in the criminal complaint who helped dump Gray’s body.
