State officials say bird flu has been detected in a Pennsylvania flock.
The Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza case was found in a 50,000-bird layer chicken flock on a commercial farm in Lehigh County, the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture said.
State and federal agencies are at the farm “carrying out a comprehensive response plan” to prevent the virus from spreading. The farm is also quarantined and all commercial poultry facilities, restricting the movement of poultry products within a 10-kilometer radius of the infected flock.
Officials say there is no risk to the general public and no infections in dairy cattle or humans have been detected in Pennsylvania to date.
Poultry and eggs are still safe to eat if cooked properly, so is pasteurized milk from infected cows.
This case is the first one confirmed in commercial poultry in the state since February 2024. The last detection of the virus in domestic birds was in a Venango County backyard flock in October 2024.
