PITTSBURGH — All the votes have been counted, and now the winner is in for the People’s Choice Award for Pittsburgh’s 22nd Annual Gingerbread Competition.
Officials say Blackhawk High School has received the most votes for their entry entitled “Pittsburgh’s Own - George Ferris & His Ferris Wheel.” It’s the third year in a row that the high school’s entry earned People’s Choice Award recognition. This year’s entry also won first place in the High School category.
The piece of gingerbread art included replicas of George Ferris’s Arch Street home and his iconic invention adorned in holiday decor. The display also had a moving wheel made entirely of gingerbread!
Officials say sculpture class students started working on the display back in September, first visiting Ferris’s home to take measurements that they would then use to create the gingerbread pieces.
“We are incredibly proud of the cross-curricular education, hard work and dedication our students poured into this project. Blackhawk High School is thrilled to take home this prestigious award for the third consecutive year—an achievement that reflects the unwavering dedication and pride of our entire Blackhawk community,” said art department teacher Ashley Biega.
