Thursday night, longtime family friend Debbie Beale introduced the proposal to rename Third Avenue “McIntire Way” in honor of the chief.

“This young man grew up on that street,” Beale said. “And this young man gave his life on Third Avenue. It just came to me that this is the right thing to do.”

McIntire was killed during a manhunt on Jan. 2, exactly four years after being sworn in as chief.

His mother and other family members attended Thursday’s meeting in support of the proposal to change the street name.

“By renaming it McIntire Way and not McIntire Street or Avenue, it calls us to consider what it meant to live in the way that Justin McIntire did and just embody those things that we most valued of the chief,” said Mayor Lindsay Fraser.

According to Fraser, the borough council fully supports the idea and will put together a draft ordinance to be reviewed at its meeting next month.

Once that’s approved, it’s just a matter of sorting out logistics before the name change becomes official.

“It’s just really making sure that we notify the right agencies, the US Postal Service, county government, state government, things like that, but we’re able to do this,” Fraser explained.

Once the new street signs go up, a man whose name won’t soon be forgotten will have a permanent reminder of his legacy for all to see.

“We see plaques and we see things all around us, but a street always remains there for a very long time,” said Beale.
