MONROEVILLE, Pa. — Monroeville police said a woman struck by a vehicle Tuesday evening outside the Giant Eagle in the area of Monroeville Boulevard has died.

The victim was identified Wednesday morning as 87-year-old Betty Israel of Monroeville.

Authorities said Israel was pushing a shopping cart from the pharmacy area of the store around 4:15 p.m. when an SUV struck her.

"She had to be pulled from underneath. The vehicle was on top of her,” Monroeville Police Chief Doug Cole said. “They did that rapidly and began resuscitative measures immediately.”

People rushed in to help, working around the SUV to give the victim CPR. Police said she never regained consciousness and died at Forbes Hospital.

“It looks like a tragic accident, but we're certainly going to dot the ‘I’s and cross the ‘T’s and do the investigation properly,” Cole said.

Investigators said the SUV driver, who is also a woman in her 70s, is cooperating with the investigation.

Authorities have not yet revealed what the driver may have been doing in the moments before the crash.

Detectives said they are reviewing surveillance video of the incident.

Cole said at least for now, no charges are pending against the driver.
