Emergency crews were called to Park Way between Senate Street and Congress Street around 5:30 a.m.

One person was rescued from the vehicle and taken to a hospital by ambulance. The extent of their injuries is unknown.

Neighbor Cherie White said it was the loudest boom she’s ever heard in her life, coming from outside of the home she shares with her boyfriend, Chris Manning.

“Me and my boyfriend were sitting on the couch, and we just heard this huge, huge explosion, and we immediately ran outside,” White said. “It sounded like an airplane hit the ground.”

“I saw the headlights coming down the hill, like, really fast,” Manning said. “It sounded like his car almost exploded, and he just like bounced off of it into that building there and smashed right into it.”

White and Manning ran over to help, finding the man behind the wheel alive.

“He was real tough. He was real nice, he just saying his arm was broke and he couldn’t move or anything, he just needed me to pull some more boards off,” Manning said.

Crews worked to pull the man out of the van. Witnesses said he was conscious and alert when he was taken to the hospital.

Neighbors told Channel 11 that the garage houses classic and antique cars and is affiliated with a local car club.

“I just hope that they put some kind of guardrails or signs up because it could have turned out a lot, a lot worse,” White said.

It’s unclear if the driver experienced a medical episode or simply lost control of the van. White Hall police continue to investigate.
