CARNEGIE, Pa. — The Allegheny County Health Department has ordered the closure of a grocery store in Carnegie.

Rahma Grocery, located at 409 E. Main St., was ordered to close after an inspection on Jan. 2.

According to an inspection report, officials found six violations, including two that are considered as high risk of causing foodborne illness.

The high-risk violations are for cleaning and sanitation, and pest management. The inspection report states the store’s meat saw was visibly soiled with multiple different types of meat, including raw fish and raw beef. It also notes an active German roach infestation, with “too many to count” dead roaches found throughout the building and roach activity seen in the ceilings and walls.

The inspection report states the store operator claimed they use a professional pest control service monthly but didn’t provide health department officials with an invoice for those services.

The inspection report says Rahma Grocery was ordered to stop food processing operations on Dec. 30 because the building didn’t have hot water. During the reinspection, gas services had not been turned on, and there was still no hot water. However, operators are accused of failing to comply with this order and were reportedly seen processing food during the reinspection.

Some of the other violations noted in the report include a walk-in freezer with a temperature of 40F, “chronic food debris” on shelves in the retail space and a lack of handwashing soap in the facility.
