MORGANTOWN W. Va. — Celebrations got out of control Saturday following the West Virginia Mountaineers' win over the fourth-ranked Baylor Bears.
The Morgantown Police Department said officers were called about 10:30 p.m. to reports of street parties that quickly escalated into riots after the game.
"I think things got a little out of hand. A lot of people did some things they shouldn't have done. A lot of property was destroyed," said WVU student Andy Golubkov.
Crowds damaged property and set fires throughout Morgantown, police said. In addition, street lights were knocked down in one area, and rocks and beer bottles were thrown at public safety personnel and their vehicles. A number of construction sites were also breached.
Efforts to control the crowds required the use of pepper spray and chemical munitions after warnings for the crowds to disperse failed, police said. Several people were arrested.
No serious injuries were reported.
