PITTSBURGH — A 9-year-old girl died after she was hit by a car in Homewood South.
Pittsburgh police said emergency crews were called to Rosedale Street near Tacoma Street just after 5:30 p.m. Sunday for reports of a child who had been riding her bike and was hit by a car.
First responders found the victim in the roadway. She had traumatic injuries, police said.
The girl was taken to UPMC Children’s Hospital in critical condition. She was pronounced dead at the hospital a short time later.
The child was later identified by the medical examiner’s office as Courtney Carter.
Police said the woman driving the car stayed on the scene and was cooperative with officers.
Neighbors along Rosedale Street are heartbroken.
“I don’t even understand how that was possible, honestly. It’s just sad,” said Jesenia Russell.
Neighbors said there are a lot of kids in the area. Pittsburgh Faison elementary school is just a couple of blocks away.
“I have a lot of younger siblings and that’s why it’s really sad to me because I do have siblings around her age,” Russell said. “Just to imagine her age group, it’s heartbreaking.”
The girl’s bicycle along with the SUV were taken in for evidence.
Collision Investigation Unit detectives were called to investigate. The investigation is ongoing.
Note: Police initially released information stating the girl’s age as 6, but is now reporting her age as 9. Our story has since been updated to reflect that change.
