The roof at Greensburg Station 2 — the oldest fire station in Greensburg, and one of the biggest — is more than 20 years old.
“It’s just, it’s the age of the roof and it’s time to go,” said Chief Tom Bell.
The roof, which is a standard shingle roof, is about 8,000 square feet. It’s seen some minor repairs in recent years, but soon, that roof will be completely replaced.
“Total replacement, and what it’s going to be is it’s going to be one of the first metal roofs we’re going to do in the city,” Bell told Channel 11′s Andrew Havranek.
The city isn’t going to have to pay for that roof replacement — or for the purchase and installation of solar panels on the roof.
“And hopefully we get a return on our investment through solar energy to operate electricity here through the entire building,” Bell said.
The project is covered thanks to grant money the city received from Live! Casino earnings that are a part of the local share account.
A total of $19.3 million is going to communities all across Westmoreland County.
Greensburg is getting about $856,000, Murrysville is getting $825,000, Jeannette will see $800,000, North Irwin will receive $775,000, and Unity Township will see $446,000.
Part of that money in Unity will go toward fixing storm sewer issues.
“There was a problem with water runoff as well as minor flooding in the Marguerite area, so we’re going to be able to fix the problem once and for all,” said Mike O’Barto, Union Township Supervisor.
Over the last two years, O’Barto said the township has received nearly $2 million from this grant program. He said it has been a huge help — from fixing a bridge last year to this flooding issue this year.
“This is a project we could never afford if we were not able to receive the grant money through the LSA grant funding program,” O’Barto said.
