PITTSBURGH — “I can’t even imagine. Six years old.”

Neighbors are still in shock after learning that six year old Jamel Austin died after an SUV hit him while he was riding a bike in Glen Hazel last night.

It happened on Johnston Avenue, in the middle of a housing complex.

When Channel 11 got to the neighborhood, we could see the bike pinned under the SUV.

“That baby lives right here on the corner. All of those kids in this neighborhood play with him every day. Our babies are traumatized right now,” Saundra Cole McKaney, a neighbor, told WPXI.

She said she saw the aftermath of the crash last night

“I saw the vehicle with the bike underneath. By that time, already rushed to the hospital.

Medics tried saving a little boy’s life, but he didn’t make it.

The driver of the SUV stopped after the crash, and hasn’t been charged.

It’s unclear if speed played a role, but neighbors say they’ve been asking for speed bumps on Johnson Avenue for years, but they’ve never been placed in.

Channel 11 reached out to the city to find out if there are plans to install speed bumps, but we never heard back.
