Multiple local police departments warn of phone service scam

CRAFTON, Pa. — Police are warning local AT&T customers of a new scam targeting their personal information.

Cell service went down for AT&T customers across the country on the morning of Feb. 22.

Customers are receiving an email that appears to be from the company telling them that, because of last week’s outage, they won’t have to pay their phone bill. To take advantage of the offer, users are prompted to click a button.

Police say, if you click the button, it asks for personal information.

When the link is clicked, you are required to enter your personal information to receive the offer.

“If an offer sounds too good to be true, it is,” Crafton Borough police said. “We want to emphasize that AT&T or any other legitimate company will never ask for sensitive information via email in this manner.”

Upper St. Clair Police posted about the scam on its Facebook page and is reminding people that no legitimate business will ask for your personal information.
