PITTSBURGH — The McKees Rocks Bridge has reopened following a dangerous head-on car crash on Friday that ended with one of the drivers running away from the scene on foot.
Police told Channel 11 News that the suspect is not in custody, but left behind an important clue in the car, their ID.
“It was instant he was running extremely fast. He actually took off his shirt while running, but I didn’t think to look at him too much. I didn’t know what he was doing, I didn’t know what was up ahead,” said driver, Keondre Wilkerson.
A Volkswagen SUV was left flipped on its side, airbag deployed, and the back window shattered.
According to police, emergency crews were called to the McKees Rocks Bridge for an overturned car just before 2 p.m. Police said a driver heading towards McKees Rocks crossed over the center line into oncoming traffic hitting a woman and her daughter who were driving into town. Police say thedriver then jumped out of the SUV and ran away.
The crash shut down the McKees Rocks Bridge in both directions for over an hour. We spoke with one man on his way to pick up his girlfriend when he got stuck in the chaos.
“I have been here for literally a whole hour, and I am still here so I am guessing it will be a little longer. I am very irritated. I have to get my girlfriend to work,” he explained.
Police have not released the name of that suspect, but are confident they will be able to make a quick arrest. As for the other car, the mom and her daughter were taken to the hospital but will be ok.
