PITTSBURGH — Pittsburgh firefighters were busy Friday evening as they responded to two house fires that happened within a block of each other.
Allegheny County dispatchers said firefighters were first called to the 7300 block of Race Street at 8:55 p.m.
Signs on that house indicated it was condemned.
Shortly after, they were called to the intersection of Idlewild Street and Sterret Street, just a block away from the first scene.
A Pittsburgh Public Safety spokesperson tells Channel 11 that the three-alarm fire in the unoccupied abandoned building spread rapidly, going from the first floor to the roof within minutes.
Flames were visibly burning out of the top of the house when our crew was on scene.
The spokesperson says a firefighter was hurt while they were climbing a ladder to the secon-floor window because a portion of the gutter fell from the house, causing the firefighter to fall onto the porch below.
The firefighter is still in the hospital in stable condition.
There is no confirmation at this time as to whether the fires are connected.
