Fire at building on Pittsburgh’s South Side ‘considered suspicious’

PITTSBURGH — Firefighters battled a 4-alarm fire on Pittsburgh’s South Side Wednesday morning.

The fire in the 1900 block of East Carson Street started around 3:53 a.m.

When our crews arrived at the scene, they could see flames shooting from the building.

Pittsburgh Public Fire Chief Darryl Jones said that the building that caught fire is vacant. The people living in the next-door apartment buildings all got out safely. There were no reports of any injuries.

“It was a little bit of a difficult fire. Once we had time to reset and get inside the floors were spongy. Some of the stairs were burned away. The temperatures right now are very warm and the guys are carrying an extra 80-100 pounds of gear so you’re wearing them out so moving up the alarms for manpower was a prudent thing to do in this case,” Jones said.

Fire investigators brought in an arson dog to help pinpoint the cause.

A spokesperson for Pittsburgh Public Safety told Channel 11 the fire is considered suspicious, but it’s still being investigated.

East Carson Street was closed for several hours this morning between 21st and 18th streets.
