DA’s office no longer seeking death penalty against man accused of murdering local Uber driver

PITTSBURGH — Days before jury selection was set at the courthouse, the District Attorney’s Office announced they will no longer be going for the death penalty in the case against Calvin Crew.

The deputy district attorney on the case filed the notice Thursday.

For nearly three years, Calvin Crew has been behind bars after police say he kidnapped and murdered his Uber driver in Monroeville.

The driver was Christina Spicuzza, a mother of four.

Police found her body in the woods several days after she was reported missing.

In the filing, the DA didn’t give any detail about why they decided to rescind the death penalty and only noted “intervening events have caused the Commonwealth to reconsider.”

There is a gag order on this case so all of our questions about what went into their decision will go unanswered.

Jury selection is scheduled this Monday and it will be a long process.
