PITTSBURGH — A man who police said was driving while under the influence when he hit and killed a 6-year-old girl in Shaler Township in September will stand trial.
Travis Grayson, 20, on Friday waived his preliminary hearing. He is charged with homicide by vehicle and driving under the influence in the death of Ava Campbell.

Police said Grayson admitted to drinking 10 beers and smoking marijuana before getting behind the wheel on the night of Sept. 26, when his vehicle fatally struck Ava as she stood in a driveway with her mother.
Michael Sherman, Grayson’s attorney, explained why they decided to waive Friday’s hearing.
“Travis, his heart goes out the Campbell family and he didn't want to put them through anymore grief by putting them through a prelim hearing, so we are going to move to the next process in the case,” said Sherman. “This has been a tragedy and he is dealing with it, it's been difficult and hopefully he'll be able to get through it, as well as the family.”
Campbell is due back in court Dec. 14 for a formal arraignment.
