Families celebrate Mother’s Day at Squirrel Hill farmers market

PITTSBURGH — Beacon Street was packed with families who decided to celebrate Mother’s Day by visiting the Squirrel Hill farmers market on its opening day.

The farmers market was held in the Beacon/Barlett parking lot at 5737 Beacon Street.

Fresh produce, locally sourced meats, cheeses and baked goods were all up for purchase. Families could also pick up some fresh flowers for mom while they were there.

There was a photo booth and a Mother’s Day card crafting station for kids.

The farmers market held in Downtown Pittsburgh also opened this week.

“Communities want farmers markets. It brings in local purveyors, local growers, everything is locally sourced and it tends to be less expensive to begin with than a grocery store,” said Amanda Sloane, fresh access program manager with Just Harvest.

Squirrel Hill’s farmers market will run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Sunday through Nov. 19.
