PITTSBURGH — A water main break on Keefe Street in Pittsburgh’s Lincoln Place neighborhood sent water gushing into a family’s home.
Terri Sabo said her husband laid down in their bed Monday morning and around 6:30 a.m., he heard the sound of moving water.
“He looked up and he saw water all over the carpet,” Sabo said.
The couple lives at the home with Sabo’s 91-year-old mother.
Pennsylvania American Water said the 6-inch water main was more than 75 years old and interrupted service to a dozen customers in the area. Sabo’s is the only house with reported damage.
“I have probably four inches of water everywhere. The garage, the entryway, the laundry room, the whole apartment that I have downstairs. Everything is destroyed. Everything is knocked over,” she said.
Sabo said her washing machine, dryer, refrigerator and freezer are all sitting in water. So are all the Christmas gifts she already purchased.
“Now what do I do? I had mostly all my Christmas shopping done, and now I have to start all over again, and who pays for that?” Sabo said.
Initially, she said the water company said she would be responsible for cleanup and repairs and that she would need to go through her homeowner’s insurance for assistance.
After Channel 11 got involved, Sabo said she got an update from the water company, agreeing to help her with the cleanup.
Pennsylvania American Water said in an email, “our contractor, Disaster Restoration Services, will be working with the customer in repairing any damage related to the event.”
The company said service should be restored to all customers by late Monday evening.
