Family continues to seek justice for Fayette Co. man shot, killed 4 years ago

MASONTOWN, Pa. — The family of Leon Mickens says he loved being a father.

“He always wished he could do more for them. Now, he doesn’t have the chance to make things right,” Latoya Brown, Mickens’ cousin, said.

Mickens died four years ago after he was shot in the head in an alley in Masontown, Fayette County.

Police at the time thought they were close to arresting a suspect, but they never had enough evidence to make a solid case.

Brown said she worries his killer will go scot free.

“I always thought murder was one thing you couldn’t get away with,” Brown said.

Mickens was shot near Water Street and Spring Avenue. Police said the shooter took off on a bicycle.

Just 10 years before Mickens’ death, his sister was also killed on the same street near the same corner. An arrest was made in her case, but the family says it’s hard to even begin healing, knowing Mickens’ killer is still free.

“We miss Leon. No matter what he did, it doesn’t matter what the situation was. It doesn’t matter,” Brown said.
