The fire on Cake Way broke out around 3:30 a.m. Flames were seen shooting from the roof.
Fire officials on the scene said two adults and a child were able to get out safely. A fire captain suffered a shoulder injury.
“The scent of the smoke actually caught my attention, and my ring bell – the motion detector started going off, so I got up and saw all of the lights coming through my window,” said Simer Clark, a neighbor.
Brooke Narr described to Channel 11 over the phone the moments that she, her boyfriend, and son tried to get out of their burning home, but when their planned escape route was overtaken by fire, her next-door neighbor, Ben, helped them to safety.
“He ran out of the house with no shirt on and was just there,” Narr said. “You could see the flames coming out of the window. [We] threw my son out the window and he caught him and caught us as best as he could.”
People who live nearby were upset to hear that Narr and her family are now without a home but are glad they’re okay.
“They’re good people. I speak to them every morning, they go to the store. I just hope everything is okay,” said Bruce Cabbagestalk, a neighbor.
Fire officials told Channel 11 that a family dog is missing. They believe the fire started in the back of the house and are investigating the cause.
