Last 2 plead in Jennifer Daugherty's torture

GREENSBURG, Pa. — The last suspects in the torture killing of a mentally challenged Greensburg woman have pleaded guilty.

On Thursday, 39-year-old Robert Masters and 30-year-old Peggy Miller pleaded guilty in the death of 30-year-old Jennifer Daugherty.

"All we have is justice for Jennifer.  We'll never have closure because Jennifer won't be back with us," said Bobby Murphy, Daugherty's stepfather.

Daugherty was held captive in February 2010 and tortured over two days before she was fatally stabbed in an apartment about 30 miles east of Pittsburgh. Masters and Miller were among six roommates in the apartment.

The two men who actually killed Daugherty, Ricky Smyrnes and Melvin Knight, are on death row for first-degree murder. Smyrnes' girlfriend at the time, Angela Marinucci, is serving a life sentence for the same charge.

Authorities said Masters and Miller played a lesser role in Daugherty's death, but didn't help her escape when they had the chance.

"It's scary.  She saw the good in everybody. That was one of the biggest things we tried protecting her from," said Joy Burkholder, Daugherty's sister.

Burkholder is trying to cope with another holiday without her sister but hopes now that the legal battles are over, she and her family can heal their hearts.

"It has been four years of confusion not knowing how you should feel.  I'm hoping this is the start to better days for everybody," said Burkholder.
