‘Fireball in the sky' in Butler Township was fire on production tank

BUTLER TOWNSHIP, Pa. — Viewer calls flooded the Channel 11 newsroom about a "fireball in the sky" in Butler Township.

Firefighters responded to what was described as a small fire on a production tank at a well pad.

"Just unknown what the material is inside.  It's obviously flammable, so we didn't want any larger of a fire or the tank to rupture and cause an even larger incident," said Fire Chief Toby Wehr.

The company that operates the well believes a valve on one of the production tanks malfunctioned, but a full investigation is underway.

Channel 11's Pamela Osborne reported the well remains intact.
