Former local police chief sentenced for stealing drugs marked as evidence for personal use

WPXI - Tim Butler Former Elizabeth Borough Police Chief Tim Butler has been indicted by a federal grand jury in Pittsburgh on a charge of theft of government property, United States Attorney Cindy K. Chung announced Wednesday.

ELIZABETH BOROUGH, Pa. — A former Elizabeth Borough police chief was sentenced in federal court for stealing drugs marked as evidence for personal use for over a year.

According to the Department of Justice, Timothy L. Butler, Jr., 46, of Finleyville, was sentenced to four years of supervised release, including three months of home confinement.

Officials said that from June 2017 to December 2018, Butler stole hundreds of bricks and bundles of heroin from the Elizabeth Borough Police Department to use himself.

According to officials, the heroin was marked as evidence that were seized in two federal drug trafficking investigations. They were stored in the evidence locker at the police station.

Acting U.S. Attorney Rivetti commended the Federal Bureau of Investigation for the investigation leading to the successful prosecution of Butler.
