Former SCI Mercer corrections officer files suit alleging harassment, discrimination

MERCER, Pa. — A former corrections officer has filed a federal discrimination suit against a Mercer County state correctional institution.

The lawsuit alleges that Amanda Kulkin was subjected to egregious sexual harassment and blatant discrimination based on her gender and disability during her time as a corrections officer at SCI Mercer.

Kulkin claims she was degraded by fellow correctional officers with verbal and written comments about her appearance and experienced unwanted physical contact from male coworkers, including one occasion when her ear was licked. She said supervisors were aware of the harassment but did nothing.

Further harassment occurred when male officers learned about her disabilities caused by a non-work-related knee injury.

According to a Kraemer, Manes & Associates LLC press release, signs were created and posted around the correctional facility, some of which informed inmates that Kulkin may have been susceptible to an attack by an inmate. One sign called Kulkin a "festering wound in the tax payer's side."

Kulkin is seeking damages for lost wages, humiliation and legal fees.
