PITTSBURGH — A fugitive who was wanted for a half dozen bench warrants was arrested in Swisshelm Park Wednesday.

The Allegheny County Sheriff’s Office said Robert Evans, 21, has been a fugitive since October, which was when he escaped from Renewal. He was wanted on several bench warrants, including cases involving theft, receiving stolen property and a firearms charge.

Sheriff’s office detectives learned Evans was at a house on Uptegraf Street. They arrived at the house Wednesday morning and were let inside by a woman. Once inside detectives saw what they believed to be a person hiding behind clothes in a bedroom closet.

Evans refused commands to show himself and detectives had to forcibly remove him from the closet. Evans continued to struggle with the detectives for almost five minutes before being handcuffed. After being handcuffed, Evans continued to resist by dragging his weight as he was taken out of the house, the sheriff’s office said.

Evans was taken to the Allegheny County Jail to answer for the bench warrants and the active arrest warrant for escape. He now faces an additional charge of resisting arrest.
