BUTLER, Pa. — A garbage truck crashed into a bank in Butler Tuesday morning.
The crash happened around 8:45 a.m. at the Armco Credit Union on Hollywood Drive in the Pullman Center Business Park.
Officials on scene confirmed the driver of the garbage truck was taken to a hospital.
Channel 11 learned the garbage truck lost control while going down the steep hill on Randolph, then crossed a busy intersection and went down an embankment before crashing right before the bank was set to open. An employee inside the building was nearly hit.
“It’s kind of crazy we just got here and just wanted to... go to the bank and this is not something you see everyday that’s for sure,” bank customer Don Olean said.
Armco officials say at least 60 employees were inside at the time of the crash and no one was hurt. Someone saw the truck and was able to warn other employees.
“they were working on the drive-thru and looked up the hill and saw this truck coming down and he was honking his horn and they yelled real quick to get out of the way,” said Randy Cypher, the CEO of Armco Credit Union. The two stations that were hit by the garbage truck, one teller was off to the side sweeping and when it went through the other teller was an arm’s length of the garbage truck.”
The bank is closed until further notice. Crews are expected to remove the truck from the building on Wednesday, then an engineer will secure the building and assess the damage.
