Garbage truck driver dies after colliding with another garbage truck, crashing into building

ADAMS TOWNSHIP, Pa. — A garbage truck driver has died after colliding with another garbage truck and then slamming into a building in Butler County Friday morning.

The crash happened around 4:30 a.m. in the 400 block of Mars Valencia Road in Adams Township.

The driver of the Waste Management truck that crashed into the building had to be extricated and was taken to a hospital with serious injuries. Adams Township police later confirmed to Channel 11 that the driver died.

The family of the deceased driver confirmed his identity as David M. Bortmes.

The other garbage truck, which is part of Vogel Disposal Service, was on the side of the road when we arrived. We’re told that driver was taken to a hospital to be checked out.

The Butler County structural collapse team is at the scene, but we’re told the building is stable as of now. No one was inside the former chiropractor office, which is now vacant.

Part of Mars Valencia Road is expected to be shut down for at least four to five hours as state police investigate.

Channel 11 traffic expert Trisha Pittman says to avoid the road between Route 228 and Babcock Boulevard.

School buses will not be allowed through the crash scene, which will impact Mars and Pine Richland school districts. Both districts have been notified.
