‘He took my son’: Man sentenced to 20-40 years for death of ex-girlfriend’s 3-year-old son

Tyler Mason was sentenced to the maximum penalty allowed, 20-40 years in jail for the 2019 death of 3-year-old Aiden Lombardi.

He was originally charged with criminal homicide, but took a plea deal to reduced charges of third-degree homicide, aggravated assault of a child and endangering the welfare of children.

Megan Meyers is Aiden’s mom. She read an emotional victim impact statement in court, that brought the judge, witnesses and lawyer to tears. She said today is the first step towards justice and she never saw the violent monster her then-boyfriend became the day Aiden was murdered.

“He took my son,” Meyers said. “For the rest of my life, I won’t have my son. None of this brings my son back. None of it ever will and that’s why this is just the beginning.”

Inside the courtroom, the judge told Tyler Mason if she could have given him more than the maximum sentence allowed, she would have. 3-year-old Aiden Lombardi was beaten to death by Tyler Mason in February of 2019. The toddler suffered five skull fractures, bruising all over his face and injuries too graphic to share.

“This is the beginning of justice as he got the max allowed at this time,” Meyers said. “Although there is a long road still, this is definitely the day we’ve been waiting for.”

Some of Tyler Mason’s family was in the courtroom, defending his character. The judge didn’t hold back, telling them they’re in denial about what happened and should have recognized Tyler Mason’s violent tendencies as a kid — including his sister’s testimony that he liked to harm animals as a kid.

After a rainy and overcast morning, Megan Meyers came out of court to find sunshine, saying Aiden’s smile was beaming down on her.

“He knows how much I love him,” Meyers added. “Those were the last words I said to him. Those were the last words he said to me.”

Tyler Mason also read a brief statement in court, but did not look at Aiden’s family and never mentioned Aiden’s name. He says he can’t begin to understand their pain and he’s tortured by what he did and will be for the rest of his life.
