ARNOLD, Pa. — A homicide investigation is underway in Arnold.
Westmoreland County dispatchers say police and medics were called to Liberty Avenue at 5:39 p.m.
Police say when they arrived they found a 73-year-old woman dead in the street. She had been stabbed multiple times.
Westmoreland County Coroner Tim Carson identified the victim as Diana N. Rebold of New Kensington. She was pronounced dead at 7:25 p.m.
A spokesperson for the Westmoreland County District Attorney said a suspect is in custody.
Police say the suspect allegedly admitted to the crime at the scene and was cooperative but charges have not been filed at this time. They also said he called 911 on himself.
“He did admit to what happened and there was no anger or anything like that. They took him into custody with ease and without incident,” said Arnold Police Chief Josh Stanga.
The suspect was reportedly standing near the victim when he was quickly arrested.
“It’s very surprising, very shocking,” said a neighbor who didn’t want to be identified. “I just instantly prayed for everybody involved, families, and hope that would not happen in this area again.”
Just before 10 p.m., the victim’s car was towed and taken in for evidence.
Investigators said they will look through surveillance video and other clues inside the home to try and piece together what happened.
“We’re going to execute search warrants and we’re going to go into the house and try to figure out what led up to this incident and for this travesty up here,” Chief Stanga said. “It shouldn’t have happened.”
Police wouldn’t say how the pair knew each other but said they did not live together.
He is reportedly in his late 30s and is being interviewed by detectives.
Authorities say there is no threat to the public.
The names of the suspect and the victim have not been released at this time.
