How to contain microscopic dust mites in homes

PITTSBURGH,None — Microscopic dust mites are making a major comeback in local homes, and if you don’t try to contain the problem, you could end up paying the price.

Dr. Fernando Holguin, who works with the Asthma Institute at UPMC, said dust mites can cause big problems.

“They really look like aliens. They’re nasty little things,” Holguin said. “They can lead to a lot of congestion and problems with sneezing.”

Joshua Conrad, who is allergic to the dust mites, said he has been dealing with the problem for a long time.

“My eyes are itchy and red. I also have an itchy and runny nose. It really bothers me,” Conrad said. “I try to make sure to keep as much dust away as possible. I also keep protectors on my pillows and mattress.”

Officials said a typical used mattress may have 100,000 to 10 million mites in it.

“Most people are exposed to them one way or another,” Holguin said. “They are a microorganism that you can’t see. They often live in bedding, especially wool bedding. They can also live in carpets and upholstery.”

Holguin said synthetic polyethylene mattresses are the best kind to keep mites away. He also recommends washing all bedding and blankets once a week in hot water.
