Indiana County coal-fired power plant to remain open

INDIANA COUNTY, Pa. — Homer City Generating Station, one of the region’s last coal-fired power plants, will continue producing energy, the owners confirmed Tuesday.

The plant, which employs 129 workers, had announced in February it was deciding whether it would stay in the coal-fired generating business or pursue other options for the plant. It had until April 4, the deadline for a PJM Interconnection capacity auction, for the decision.

“We did a lot of hard work to examine and reevaluate the operation and economics of our Homer City units,” Homer City President and CEO William A. Wexler said in a statement. “We’re pleased we established a path forward with our operations, supported by a talented team of employees.”
