‘It’s pretty insulting’: Braddock neighbors fed up over piling bags of trash

BRADDOCK, Pa. — Piles and piles of trash line June Way, an alleyway in Braddock.

“This is from October,” neighbor Maurice Reynolds said. “It’s bags upon bags.”

Neighbors said the garbage has been growing for weeks, even months.

“There’s times where I had to take trash to my job to get rid of because it’s stacked up so high back here,” said Reynolds.

Reynolds reached out to Channel 11 for help.

“It’s really getting frustrating,” Reynolds said.

He and his neighbors said they’ve called and called Big’s Sanitation for a pickup to no avail.

“They keep saying someone’s going to come out, or there’s trucks in the area and it just keeps piling up,” said neighbor Vincent Klopfenstein. “It doesn’t get picked up.”

Reynolds said it has been an ongoing problem.

“I feel like they just completely forget about us, and we call consistently,” he said.

Neighbors also said Big’s Sanitation didn’t pick up their trash for weeks over the summer too.

“This is the longest it’s been,” said Cathy Meres who’s lived on June Way most of her life. “I don’t know. I just think it’s negligence.”

Borough Manager Louis Ransom claims the waste has been piling up for only two or three weeks. He told Channel 11 they’ve been trying to work with Big’s and have been calling the company repeatedly, as recently as Tuesday, Jan. 14, to fix the problem.

“The response is always positive from Big’s - that they’ll address it and send a truck out that afternoon or the next day, however there are still addresses that have been missed on our regular pickup days and we’re not sure why,” Ransom said.

Reynolds told Channel 11 the piles are becoming a nuisance and are even attracting animals.

“We just want to see our trash picked up,” Reynolds said. “I’m tired of walking up and down the alleyway picking up trash.”

Klopfenstein agreed.

“It’s pretty insulting,” he said. “It’s a basic necessity that we all have and to just be ignored like that, it’s not cool. It’s not right and they need to fix it.”

The borough manager said they’re looking at short term solutions for people.

Channel 11 has called and emailed Big’s Sanitation and has not heard back.
